I Dare You! – Step out of your Comfort Zone

By Guest Blogger: Tanuja Dabir

If you are like me, you most probably don’t like to step out of your comfort zone. Trying new things can be challenging. It initiates a lot of mental chatter which is hard to ignore, right?

Now, I had been thinking of doing FB Live sessions for my nutrition/ lifestyle tribe and fans for a while. But going ‘live’ was sort of unnerving, out of my comfort zone. Now this is coming from someone like me who has been a stage performer all my life! I was acting, dancing, writing and reciting poetry since the age of 6 years. I was even a radio and TV artist growing up back home. For Pete’s sake, I am also a public speaker!! So why on earth would I feel anxious about going live on FB?

Silly. Right?

1424276841995-672x372I guess it was just about trying something new which I had not done before! I was making the silliest of excuses like- I don’t know if it will go well, what if I forget what to say, what if nobody shows up live, what if the recording stops or no one can hear me and so on. Is this kind of self doubt and mental chatter familiar to you? I mean it’s true on so many fronts- whether you are trying to eat better or exercise more, or try out a new hobby or apply for a new job. We always think of excuses and keep postponing taking action. But finally I did go live recently! (Pat on my back? Sure- thank you!!!) So if you are wondering what made me finally take the plunge, then let me tell you there were two things.

First, I was ‘dared’ by a fellow nutritionist colleague of mine. She dared me stop over thinking it and just do it.

Secondly, I attended TEDx Stanley Park event recently, and oh it was sooo inspiring.

Coincidentally, the theme was all about ‘taking action’!! Yeah universe….bring on all the cues so it sinks in once and for all. Couple of things said by the speakers hit me real hard, so naturally I had to share them with you. Why? Coz I know many of you struggle with taking action when it comes to your health and wellbeing! It generally comes down to the mindset and the mental chatter we all have going on within us. Here’s what one of the speakers said:

“Hell on earth is meeting the man or woman you could have been.”

“We all act consistent with WHO we believe we are. Who do I have be BE, to live the life I want?”

Isn’t that so powerful? So, let me ask you this…

1. Who do you see yourself as?

Do you see yourself as weak, sick, without self-control, confused, trapped in your current body and lacking will power to make a change?

Do you want to continue being so, suffer from symptoms and get sicker overtime?

What story are you telling yourself that is keeping you from achieving what you envision?

2. Who do you want to become?

Who do you really want to be in 6 months, 2 years, 5 years and 10 years? The time doesn’t matter. The vision does! Your vision will drive you to overcome the fears, the self doubt and the mental chatter and inspire you to take action. You just have to start with one small baby step.

(Oh by the way, when was doing my live video, my worst fears did come alive! The connection failed. Not just once but twice! The audio was lost for a few seconds. AND Yes, I did forget what I had to say and also fumbled and rambled quite a bit.) But I not only did I survive it, I actually enjoyed it! And went on to do it again the following week! With that said, I’d like to offer you some fairly simple steps that just require ACTION on your part to move from the person you THINK you are right now (which is always less than what you truly are) into the person you WANT to be simply by holding that vision and taking the action needed to get there.

Ready? Here we go:

i) Answer these 2 questions:
  1. ·        Who do I see myself as?
  2. ·        Who do I want to be?

It can be in any area of your life- health, mindset, lifestyle, finances or relationships. Tune-in…..dig deeper.

ii) Chart out a simple 3 step action plan that will help you become that person.
iii) list the resources, help/ support you need to begin that change.

Let me give you an example: say you want to be healthier and live in your ideal body:

  • Do you currently see yourself as unappealing, stuck in body jail and unable to look at yourself in the mirror? Or do you see yourself in your ideal body, feeling sexy, confident, fulfilled, energetic and more importantly ‘alive’!
  • What can you do to tend to your body and really take care of it?
  1. ·         Change your eating habits so you can feel good from the inside out
  2. ·         Be mindful of your food choices so what you eat provides you with energy
  3. ·         Address the imbalances or deficiencies that may be at the root of your present condition
  4. ·         Move your body more or start an exercise routine whether it’s yoga, Pilates, dancing, running, going to the gym or simply walking.
  • Figure out, if you can you do it alone, or do you need an accountability partner or professional help? It could mean working with a nutritionist    who could help you with customized program or join a group program. It could mean working with a personal trainer, joining a gym or classes    at the community centre. Do you need to get some tests done or see a doctor or a naturopath?

So today I ‘dare you’!

If you want to be the person you envision, you have to take action. You can’t do the same things as you are currently doing and expect a different result. I really want this for you! That is my passion and my mission.I refuse to let you side track yourself. I refuse to let you think that someone other than you can create a change and make you better. I refuse to let you think that you are powerless, helpless when it comes to your wellbeing.

So are you in for the challenge?

I’m here to cheer you, support and guide you, if needed. Leave me a comment and share your vision and action tasks.Let’s take action together and be the person we deserve to be.
